Starting problem intermittently 900 1994

Hi,
My 1994 Volvo 960 has developed a weird starting problem. When the engine is medium warm or warm it will not restart at times. When it fires the mixture must be too rich as evidenced by black smoke coming out the exhaust. After running rough on a few cylinders for a few seconds the mixture leans out and the engine runs great. Sometimes it will not start at all. Mileage 96000.

When I disconnect the battery and let the computer go back to its default the engine starts fine. After about 10 plus miles the sensors are coming back on line and the trouble starts again. There are no error codes or any engine service lights.

As we live a distance from the nearest repair facility it is impractical to turn in the car if the problem does not happen all the time. Any insight into this problem will be appreciated.

Regards,
Kurt
