For a graphic explanation look at this: http://www.homestead.com/volvo2/aw70.html.
Otherwise just remember Double 'A' M C O !
Seriously, if you had your own shop you put the brick on the lift and drop out the transmission. The AWs don't weigh that much. Then you could easily drain the torque converter and the whole tranny. Replace the rear oil seal on the engine and revise all the exterior seals on the transmission as well as changing the the filter and pan gasket. Last time I had tranny trouble with my 86 240 (200+k) I told the guys at NAPA who were working on to just repair the seals on the shifter linkages and the gasket on the O/D solenoid. That I wasn't going to buy a tranny job on the basis of leaking seals or the age of the unit. That was about 30k ago and she is still going strong. I also have an AW70 or AW71 if your intrested, but it has to be picked up in Hickville, NY.
It came out of a 780 with 40k on it. There is also a B280 that is available as well. Anybody interested??? Please let me know ASAP, as I am either going to use it or blow it out through a local wrecking yard. With gasoline at $3/gal storage space is just becoming to expensive. Going to convert my 87 Toyota FX (has carb) to propane and run that instead of the brick. Just have to exchange the fuel tank at Homedepot when it runs out.
