Thoughts on pricing for service? 700 1986

I just had my '86 Turbo Diesel in the shop and had just planned on having the oil changed, tires rotated, and A/C fixed (last year they put a retro fit kit and new compressor yet there was no cool air at all this year). The shop mostly just works on Volvos so I've felt comfortable with having them working on it over the years.

I had planned on it costing around $100 for the work that was done, but it ended up being over $300. When they started up the car one time some of the dashboard lights came on, which has happened on and off over the past few months. They said the alternator was going bad and replaced the brush pack, then when that didn't work they put a rebuilt alternator in.

Oil Change - $80
--$23 for oil
--$33 for oil filter
--$24 for 20 mins of labor

Tire Rotation and Balance - $60

A/C - $170
--$52.50 for R134A
--$117 for labor @ 1.5 hrs

Repair Alternator -$600
--$175 rebuilt alt
--$117 labor to replace brush pack @ 1.5 hrs
--$312 to repair wiring @ 4 hrs

Obviously if I'm still driving a 22 year old vehicle I'm not super rich. I'm really not happy about having to pay almost $1,000 since I was only planning on paying around $100. I feel as though I have been hosed and would appreciate it if some of you could give me your opinions as to whether these prices are completely out of line or not compared to other shops.

Before I moved (where it used to be easy for me to work on my car), I'd change my own oil which cost me around $14 to do and I would buy Mann filters for $3 online.
