Gas smell in trunk - slow starting 200

My 87 B230F has a new fuel pump (main) filter and relay with a 1998 date on it
Nothing else as far as fuel parts have been replaced
Starting has ALWAYS been a one touch and go thing

Now i got a gas smell in the trunk.. pulled the carpet and the in-tank cover and no wet spots

The main fuel pump works great tho

Fuel economy has gone up AND down

There is no "dripping" (e.g. profuse) under car

Engine compartment seems to have no smell or wet areas

Jacked up car and couldn't find the source of odor thru the lines

I'm befuddled

I'm thinking that the return line is crimped/cracked OR the roll over valve is leaking with a fine mist

Anyone got any ideas as to what else to look for before this Texas Heat/Humidity melts my brains?

Tim
