Thermostat vent nipple question 900 1994

I went and bought a t-stat at Auto Zone before reading the faq's. It did not have the vent nipple mentioned, so I put the old one back in properly (up position) with a new gasket and antifreeze.
Went looking on Groton, and most that were pictured did not seem to have this vent nipple at all.
Is it really that mandatory, and could I have used the Autozone t-stat with no problems?
