'93 244 'service engine light' How to reset to off?

My '93 244 has had the "Service Engine" light on at start up (stays on for a few minutes) and then goes out.

1/ Is this a mileage based indicator for oil chnages or for O2 sensor replacement?

How do I get this to stop as disconnecting the battery does not work. I also tried the pluger in the instrument panel but I am not sure what the ignition setting should be when pushed in or if it works as I recall that these are not always operational.

Thanks
