my son is away at school, and his shifter has 'shifted' 200

My son drives a very well maintained '83 240 wagon w/manual tranny. He called today to report that his shifter has "shifted"; everything seems to have shifted to the left. 3rd and 4th are now dead center, and he has to pull the reverse switch to get way over to the left to 1st and 2nd. Reverse is difficult, but not impossible, to find.

Any ideas? I have a lot of experience with 240s, but they've all been automatics. If it's a simple linkage thing, I might throw some tools in the car, drive to where he is and have a go at it.
