85 244 rack and pinion woes,or, I found the clunk in the front end while turning 200

I moved the boot on the driver side and with my son wiggling the steering wheel I can see the rack moving up and down accompanied by the clunk...not the entire steering assembly just that end of the rack that would be covered by the boot..my questions are, how do you tell what kind of rack it is? is this even repairable? will other racks from newer 240s fit? why would that rack gear move? is the pinion gear worn? where to buy a rack and pinion steering assembly? answers to any or all of these questions will be greatly appreciated. Kris
