740 Turbo will not start when hot 700 1985

I have a 1989 740 Turbo. Sometimes, when I stop it after driving for 30 minutes or so, if I leave it for 5 minutes or so, it won't start. The Ignition lights all come on etc but the starter motor won't go. (it acts as if the car is not in park). If I leave it for 30- 45 minutes, it will start OK. seems to me that it is likely to be heat related (a foulty thermal switch or something). Looking at my manual, there is a thermal time switch shown on the circuit diagram - could it be that - any idea where I would find it.
any other things that are worth trying?
