Air Mass Sensor 700

So, my nephew's looking at a used 740 (1989 740GL), despite or maybe because of my efforts to demonstrate the virtues of my old 240 wagon. It seems that the present owners believe it needs a new Air Mass Sensor, something I don't have on my old car and so have no experience with. Does such a thing have a limp-home mode, and can they be repaired? Can you recommend a good source for one that's been rebuilt?
