1991 740 TRW Ball Joints After 48,300 Miles Bad 700

I rebuilt the front end of my 740 in December of 2003. Replaced were the Balls Joints (TRW), struts (with Sachs Advantage), Other Tie Rod ends (Febi), new sway bar links, etc. I am getting the old 740 ready for another Minnesota Winter and noticed play in the ball joints. The Tie Rod ends had no noticeable play.

Should the TRW ball joints last longer than 48,300 miles without getting play (used the big screwdriver to move the joint)? I would guess it to be a couple mm but have not used a gauge.

I also have a 1995 940 with 64,900 miles and checked it's ball joints. There was no play whatsoever.

I have read the posts saying TRW is OEM for Volvo and is good quality but should I expect more miles than 48,300 on the TRW ball joints before getting play? Is it worth buying the Volvo ball joints and if so, has anyone bought from Borton online?

What is the difference between radial play and axial play?

Thanks-Glen
