b230ft new engine noise 900 1995

I wonder if anyone has any idea about valvetrain noise on a '95 b230ft. I started the car this morning, and there was a pronounced 'tock tock tock' from the engine. Sounded like it was coming from the valvetrain, getting faster with engine RPMs. I checked the compression, seemed pretty even across the 4 cyl's (within 10 PSI) Took the cam out and looked under the 'buckets' and it looks like the rubber (hushers?) are dried out. The ones on cyl 4 were completely broken and in pieces.
Question is, how much noise would come from hardened and missing rubber parts in the valvetrain? Will I damage anything if I run the car without a few of them until I can get replacements? It is my only car...
