Get yourself a 5 gallon gas can, full. There are some long lonely stretches on I-10 between Kerrville and El Paso, and From Las Cruces to Deming and points west. Bad places to run out of gas. Carry 5 gallons of water, too. Phoenix got TV news recognition for 10 days of over 110 F. Tucson can't be much different.
Quick checks on the rich mixture. Make sure that the hot air hose to the air filter box from the exhaust heat shield is disconnected. If the air box thermostat fails, the AMM gets only hot air and gradually fries.
If you can, take off the accordion air hose and examine it for holes. They can occur on the bottom side and are hard to find on the car. If you find holes, the quick & dirty fix is to wrap the general area with electician's tape. Best fix is a new hose, obviously.
If you have the tools, while the engine is running do a tightening twist on all the accessable intake manifold nuts (10mm). You might hear a change in the engine, points to putting is a new manifold gasket when you can.
A leaky injector can enrich the mixture, but that's hard to go after on the road.
Good Luck,
Bob
