AW71 not shifting until warmed up 700 1999

My 1990 760 Turbo has the AW71 trans. Only after warming up for 15 minutes or so will it shift from 1st to 2nd. Also if I baby it along in starting gear (D)Drive (I believe that is 1st)for a 1/2 a mile at 20MPH, it will begin to shift just fine and then drives beautifully as long as it isn't shut off for awile.
I have had the fluid changed about 2500 miles ago, which didn't look too bad, but that has not fixed the problem. Does the AW71 use a filter or a screen?. Anyone had this problem or know a fix??? I read in the forums that flushing can dislodge varnish. I have 178,000 miles. Is flushing a possible help?
