245 Rear Seat Back trouble 200 1990

Hi, The early latch assy. is seldom problematic. This is another example of the bean counters winning. The best long term bet is scrounging an ealier seat back with compatable covering. The dealers did sell a new latch handle as often as needed (not very cheap). They get brittle like the door pockets, but can be installed w/out removing the seat. To remove the seat back...take out the R+L screws for the support struts (seen from door opening w/seat down). Flip carpeted baffle panel behind seat and release spring tension so it will not distract. At bottom of seat back is an 'axle' pivot in a shaped socket. The trick is that the end of the 'axle' is spring loaded and must be pushed toward the door opening while lifting the seat back up. This can be done with one or more flat prying tools but can be tough on the fabric and operator and is best practiced on a 'test mule'. Both sides must be freed to remove back and as I recall, they can relatch themselves while you work the other side. A folded rag between the freed 'axle' and socket can make things smoother. Best of luck!
