rattle in steering column?

I1992 240: I just replaced very worn swaybar mounts, (plus, metal bracket and tie-ends) expecting to eliminate some clunks and rattles. My first trip down our dirt road made me realize that the extremely worn parts I replaced did not eliminate the most noticeable of clunks and rattles.

[Looking closely at the suspension (and jiggling the wheels while jacked-up) the passenger-side ball joint seems to be leaking; sloppy wheel bearings(?) and maybe steering-arm ball ends are all contributing to the noise and uneven tire wear --- outside wear on passenger side, inside tire wear on drivers side --- odd.]

Any advice would be appreciated.

BUT what I notice most is a rattle that sounds like it is the steering column down in the front end. I've noticed it on our 1991 740 wagon, too... but much less. Hit a bump and there is a quickly dying clatter clatter clatter. The 240 is scarey sounding. I don't want the AirBag to deploy. I'm concerned.

What do you think that steering column rattle is about?
