trying to figure out rear window defroster problem 900 1992

My newly-acquired '92 940 sedan has one of those rear window defrosters with tiny filaments embedded inside the glass, instead of the ones which are on the outside. I'm trying to figure out how to fix it, since it doesn't work and the FAQ seems to only address the more 'traditional' defroster hookup. Fuse is fine, but the amber light on the switch doesn't glow - does it have to light to be good? Also, this is the 1st 940/740 I've ever seen that doesn't have heated mirrors - the switch is defrost only. Puzzling, since it's a 940gl and is fully loaded otherwise. An anomoly, perhaps?
