To shorten a long story, I need to prepare my "spare" head to replace the one rebuilt 27K miles ago. (Hardened seats, as I requested, were not installed.)
HP is not the goal, low end torque and MPG is what I'm after. Since improved VE is always a good idea anyway I thought I would get some suggestions from you guys.
The setup is completely standard; HS6 carbs, B18 standard bore & stroke, C grind cam, single downpipe exhaust, M40 transmission, and Dana 27 4.10 rear end. This configuration produces 26-28MPG.
Professional head porting is not in the budget for this repair. Bigger and better things are planned for the distant future. Right now I just need to get the spare head ready to swap out when there is no more adjustment available on the current head. Should I do anything to the runners or bowls? I think port velocity is more important than outright flow so I am loathe to do much here.
What is the depth from the piston top to the top of the first ring on the B18 piston? I need this information to calculate SCR. I can measure the other variables.
What SCR should I shoot for?
What quench clearance should I set?
Should I spring for the double down manifold and the associated exhaust? If so, what needles for the carbs?
