The minimum safe clearance depends mostly on what pistons are used. Some forged pistons (Venolias, for sure) "grow" much more with heat than the stock Mahle types.

IMHO, rods don't stretch enough to worry about, but they do lengthen with heat.

I've been measuring old head gaskets as they come off, and typically they are substantially thicker than advertised. The .030 Elring gaskets seem to crush no thinner than .035, and the big-bore "cutting edge" ones -- advertised at .050 crushing to .047 -- don't go below .055 in actual practice... this is something I still need to verify on the MPPE, in fact.
