Cleaning the car up a bit.. 200 1989

Yaleh
QUESTION:"Just wondering about cleaning under the hood of my 240. I want to start taking care of some issues in there and I find that it's pretty dirty in there. Can I just use a foaming cleaner/degreaser and wash down? Anything I should be wary of, like electricals etc? Then after it's clean, should I spray something over to preserve/maintain components?"

ANSWER: I use a citrus based foaming cleanser (sorry, can't recall the brand). Get the engine warm (not hot), spray the stuff on and let sit for 10 minutes. Now pressure wash off the gunk. Start the car in a dark area, if it runs rough, look for sparks from the plug and coil wires, if you see them, you need new wires. Try to avoid pressure washing the distributor directly. As far as the protective coatings, forget about it.

QUESTION:"Also, I wonder- how does one gap a plug? The books say to ensure a proper gap, but I wouldn't know how to bend that little electrode without knarling up the surface.."

ANSWER: Forget about gapping platinum or multi- prong plugs. If you are using stock plugs or a similar style, use a feeler gauge to measure the gap. If the gap is too wide, lightly tap the finger on a work bench and re-measure the gap, repeat until the appropriate feeler gauge slides in with minor resistance. I'm sure someone out there uses a bending tool to adjust the gap, but I've never had an issue with the above method... just make sure the finger lines up side to side with the center electrode.

QUESTION:"What's the best method of gluing outer trim back onto the body. I'm speaking specifically about the plastic near the bottom of the doors and body. I thought maybe a polyurethane construction adhesive caulk would work pretty well."

ANSWER: Peel off the left over double sided tape on the door and the back of the trim. Get some Scotch or 3M trim/badge double sided adhesive tape. Advance Auto carries the stuff. Cut the strips to the proper width, clean all surfaces and stick that puppy back on the door. It will last another 18 years.

QUESTION:"Finally, you know all those metal clips that hold the plastic bits (black plastic bumper etc) on the outside of the car? Is there somewhere cheaper than IPD to get those? Is there an equivalent out there that works just as well?"

ANSWER: Sorry, no help on this one, I have never lost them or gotten a car without them.

Hope that helps!
