Intermittent extra rich condition 200 1986

I made the mistake of telling my perfect running 245 that we would be taking it on a cross country trip in 4 weeks, and it started running very rough at idle, with black smoke like a diesel, but intermittently. I just changed the intake hose, plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and as an extra measure threw in a known good AMM. The plugs were uniformly fouled in all holes so it is not a faulty injector, and the ECT sensor is fairly new. Right now it is behaving, but I am leaning toward an ECU failure.

FYI, the car has been driven about 3000 miles since a complete engine compartment rewire and a used ECU installed.

Has anyone experienced like symptoms and found a cure?

Thanks,
