Questions about my first 960 900 1996

Picked up my first 960 yesterday from the po. It's a '96 with 115,570 miles and I have all the service records. I've been working on 240, 740, 940 for a number of years. I need to wash the engine compartment. It appears to be pretty well protected. Do I need to take any other precautions before I take it to the car wash and use the low pressure soaping, then the higher pressure washing? Also, the shift mode switch doesn't appear to work. It shifts so smooth it's hard to tell the shifts, but I think it's in E-mode and is hitting all the gears. I don't plan to use the other modes, but don't want to damage anything. Pushing the mode buttons doesn't result in any movement of other buttons. They appear to be "stuck" in their current positions. Do I need to r/r this? Thanks for any help. I'm sure there are more questions to come as I dig into this car. I've read the faq and am already dreading the climate control vac diaphragm repair.
