Does the blower fan need to be replaced?

Hello Everyone,

Well....it happened. I was out of town working when I got the call from my wife. The blower fan ('82 245) stopped working. She said that there were no real noises to speak of. It sputtered for a few minutes and then stopped. That's it. It seems like a cruel joke after I recently managed to get the a/c working properly. Anyway....with winter approaching we will need heat.

MY QUESTION: The fuse looks fine. Other than assuming the blower fan went bad...Is there anything else I can check before attempting to do change the fan myself? After reading all the prior posts concerning the three methods (removing the dash, the "chainsaw method", and the "hole saw method"), I'm a little intimidated. Thanks.

By the way, my mechanic quoted me $700 just for the labor here in Brooklyn, NY.
