Water Pump Removal 780 B280 700 1988

I want to replace the water pump and all cooling/heat hoses on my 1988 780. The engine is the non-turbo V6 (B280). All the repair manuals I've looked at say to remove the intake manifold (in addition to other obvious parts). Looking at the water pump I can't see why I would need, or want, to remove any of the intake system. Has anyone removed the water pump and hoses on a B280 without removing any of the intake system, and if so, did not removing the intake manifold present any problems?

Thanks in advance
