Exhaust Header Pipe Problem 200 1988

I'm trying to replace my 1988 245DL header pipe after the flange on the end that connects to the catalytic converter broke off the original pipe.
The problem is the pipe, when bolted in place, hits and is tight against the edge of the transmission mount. Because of this, sound resonates through he interior of the car. I'm using a Walker pipe. Took the first one back but the second one has the same issue. Is there a fix, short of returning the unit and finding another manufacturer? As I see it, I could probably put extra exhaust flange gaskets between the exhaust manifold and header pipe flange, thus lowering the unit, or grind away part of the transmission mount for clearance or the Neanderthal method of hammering a dent in the pipe. Also, I noticed there are shims between the transmission mount the the frame rails. But if i remove these to clear the pipe I will then probably have tansmission/driveshaft alignment issues. Any suggestions out there?
