Cold WX starting/charging problem 700 1987

Do you have an updated engine wiring harness? This sounds a like some of the gremlins I had before I replace my harness. I never knew what and in what conditions something was going to happen that prevented a component from working or the car not starting at all. What you describe seems like it could be a fuel system relay also. I would start there. Also, keep in mind that all the system relays are behind the ash tray in your car and that if you have contact issues moving the shifter around could be casing a relay to react incorrectly. By the way since installing my new wiring harness I am actually enjoying this car. It is the first pre-1988 Volvo I have owned and didn't pay attention to the wiring harness problems of earlier cars mentioned on the forum. My Bad
