Cold WX starting/charging problem 700 1987

It is temprature related; this is a daily driver and I NEVER have an issue whatsoever during the warm months. Once the temp drops below 40 degrees this issue begins every morning.
When I start initially all the gauges are inop. after the vehicle warms up the gauges return to normal after I toggle the overdrive switch a few times.
The strange thing is that when it is cold and I turn the ignition on, the overdrive arrow is illuminated, and when driving while illuminmated the overdrive is engauged and visa-versa. Occasionally I see the battery idiot light begin to illuminate suggesting while in this state there is little if not any charge going to the battery, as the headlights are dim and all assessories operate at reduced voltage, and as I said when it warms and I hit the OD switch everything returns to normal...until the next morning..
Thanks for the replies!
