speed sensor questions 200 1986

Okay guys....here we go again.
Have a 1986 240 sedan that is having some problems. I had to pull the rear differential cover to fix some pin holes and since that time my speedometer is working erratically and my odometer has stopped entirely. I have tried using various shims (aquired at the dealer) to try and space out the speedometer sensor, but to no avail. I have read on here what gap I need to achieve but I don't have any feeler gauges that are long enough to reach between the sensor and the ring.
I've gotten the speedometer working fairly well and it seems to be pretty accurate except for one point. When I hit 30 miles per hour the needle will jump up to about 60 mph and will then settle back once I hit about 40 mph. As for the odometer it just sits there and does nothing.
Now I have replaced the gear in the odometer and it was working before pulling the diff. cover. What's getting to me is that the sensor in the diff. is supposed to control both the speedometer AND the odometer so why is one working (somewhat) and the other not?
Now I will say that after replacing the odometer gear I did have a short period where the odometer quit. This lasted for approximately 10 miles and then it started ticking off once again. After that one episode I haven't had any more problems with it.
If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. This thing has been driving me nuts for the last few nights and I'd like to get it fixed.
Also, if anyone has any ideas on how to make a feeler guage that is long enough to reach the sensor through the fill hole on the diff. that also would be welcome.
Thanks a lot,
Dave
