sudden temp gauge problems 760 gle 1990. 700

Had the trusty 760 gle for 3 years with the temperature gauge working perfectly.
Yesterday the gauge suddenly dropped from its normal reading and started oscillating all over the place then settling back to zero.
Certainly not the engine overheating or thermostat problems.
Ive had the gauges out and checked for loose connections etc and cleaned and recrimped the connectors, and checked the engine sender for corrosion.
Not tried using resistors at the sensor yet to test the gauge,it feels to me that this problem lies in the instrument unit itself because of how fast the gauge oscillates.
As anybody had these same problems and sorted it out? The fuel gauge has always been flaky if this helps.
