Instrument cluster : do I need it to drive? 200 1990

There's a plastic ticking type noise coming from the area of my instrument cluster when excelerating and traveling at high speeds. Got another odometer face at the junkyard and changed it out (thinking it might be one of those gears in there) and that didn't help. I even changed the little white plastic gear.
I'm gonna spare you all the details of what I've done in chasing the noise.
At this point I simply want to know if I can take the car for a little highway drive without the instrument cluster installed. Seems possible!
Just want to rule out the cluster as the noise maker.
Thanks.
