Have you actually done just a balance alone as a comparison?

The thing with 4 bangers is that because all the pistons are stopping at the same time at TDC & BDC, that they are never truly balanced until you fit balance shafts to them.

I've done a few 4G54 2.6 litre Mitsubishi's, they have a balance shaft that Porsche borrowed their patent for to make the 3 litre 944 work. This is the funny part, to make the 4G54 go, you take the balance shaft out & replace it with a dummy shaft... It saves a few HP & stops the block from cracking around where the balance shaft lives.

Unfortunately, I got spoiled by driving a B30 around for awhile, after that, balanced B20's are rough & stock ones are really rough.
