'89 Volvo: engine cut out / inconsistent response after 50 mi. drive - electrical?

Did the shop read the onboard diagnostic codes? That would be a good place to start.

Replace the RPM sensor that's fraying-- that's not a good sign, and in my mind it could explain the symptoms. Also replace the fuel system relay and consider replacing the ignition amplifier, which can also cause the same symptoms. These 3 things will eliminate a large portion of the electrical reasons for stalling.

The electrical smell would support the idea that it was a bad fuel system relay-- it's the only one of the three items inside the car where you could smell it if it was acting up.

Good luck!
