'96 960 Air Pump Questions 900 1996

I've noticed that the air pump on this car is pretty noisy. I've replaced the broken rubber mounts, but it still sounds like one of those tire inflaters that plug into the lighter. It appears that there's a filter inside the intake. Should it be that noisy? Does the filter get replaced periodically? When I first drive the car in the morning, I can hear what appears to be the exhaust. It's a popping sound like a glasspack muffler and varies with the engine speed, but after several minutes it quiets down. Is this a result of the air pump running? Thanks for the help.
