I don't think your pinging is due to ignition advance. I routinely have run
20° initial advance and only had trouble when it was very hot or when the engine
was badly carboned up. I usually run the cheapest gas.
I have given up on Grose Jets. (They are aftermarket, NOT OEM!) I went back
to the viton tipped OEM needles and they seem to be better.
Are you sure you are not leaking gas somewhere?
Two lid gaskets on your float chambers do not do anything for leakage but they
DO raise the float level the thickness of the gasket! The lids are vented and
you want them to be that way so you don't pressurize the carb.
It really sounds to me like your gas is going somewhere else and not contributing
to your engine running. 15 mpg might not be too bad for a b30 around town but
it is REALLY bad for a 4-cylinder. Even with my worst lead foot driving in a
big-bore B20 with HD8 carbs mine didn't get that bad!
You are sure that your ignition is advanced and not retarded....?
(One quick check is to turn the distributor to where it idles the fastest and
then check where it is timed. Mine have usually come out pretty close to 20°
BTDC.
Is John Mc anywhere close to you? Might be good to have him take a look at it.
