Whiney Noise From Rear ......... 200 1986

Hello. 1986 stick shift(M46) sedan. For past couple of weeks I've noticed a whiney noise from rear. Not that loud. Hardly noticeable but definitely new noise. Only is there when in gear. When I put it in neutral noise seems to go away. Rear differential ? Needs grease/oil in it changed ? I changed it about 2x/25,000 miles ago. Thanks for advice on this.
