I've been adopted. I highly recommend it. Local Volvo indie has taken a liking to the guy who has 23 Volvos and lets me use the lift sometimes, as well as get parts at wholesale.
Today, I put the new favorite up on the lift at 9:30AM. '87 745T has 191K and the rear shock bolts still had the undercoating on them. So rear shocks, rear brakes and the IPD rear bar were on by 11 or so.
Up to the front. I did control arm bushings, ball joints, Sachs struts and IPD sway bar. Thanks to local buddy Dave Shannon for the killer deal on the sway bars.
While I was there, also changed the oil and put in new cap, rotor, plugs and wires. All this knowing if I have any questions or need a special tool or something, I've got an expert opinion and a fully stocked Volvo shop at my disposal.
A lift has got to be the best tool a mechanic can ever own, especially for suspension work. If you can't get yourself adopted like I did, get yourself a lift. I do believe I have been spoiled now.
Man, what a ride home. Swaybars are perfect and Sachs shocks/struts are just right for me, a little road feel but not too harsh. Considerably better than the old shocks which looked 1987 all around.
I got this car for free but have really fallen in love with it. It's got the "salt&pepper" interior, MBC at 13 lbs, transplanted M46. I put on Hydras and tinted the windows. I personally think I'm at darn near the pinnacle of RWD Volvos, but then I've got a penchant for turbos, manual transmissions, and five doors.
