I came to this forum, because I have crazy question, which cannot be answered in my country...... Perhaps I can find more knowledge here.
I have a '91 240 GL witch B230F engine. I intend to build a woodgasproducer on this car. Driving on woodgas needs an extra 10 to 15 degrees advanced ignition, because of the slow burning gas. The present ignition cannot be advanced because it gets signal from the TDC sensor. An oldfashioned distributor could be advanced mechanically.
Now what to do?
1.Could the present ignition be electronically manipulated? I am a layman on that, but it might be done easy. Perhaps with a potentio meter?
2.I am thinking about a solution which could be done, but is a lot of work: Take the distributor of an older type B23 or B230 with timing (hall) sensor it. Use the ignition coil that is now being used. Driving on woodgas: All connections to the injection and ignition ecu's are disconnected by relay. The same relay connects the new distributor to the ignition coil. Driving on gasoline: distributor is disconnected and the original system is functioning. This way I could, while driving on woodgas, mechanically advance ignition. Both systems use the same ignition coil and the high voltage part of the distributor. Could this be done? How important is the resistance of the coil? The oldfashioned distributor could ask for a different coil?
