Water Pump Failure? 200 1993

Hello my friends,

In the last week, about three times as I recall, I heard a strange buzzing or whirring noise which sounded like it came from somewhere in the dash. Try as I might to locate where the noise was coming from for the 10 seconds or so it persisted, I could not.

Today I observed an antifreeze puddle under the car, with my coolant tank empty. I filled it up with water and got the car home. When I inspected things, peering through the area under the water pump, I noticed a constant drip drip of coolant.

Do I take it that the water pump has failed and likely that was where the noise was coming from (even tho it sounded like it was coming from behind the instrument cluster or dash area)? I'm also curious as to how water pumps fail and lastly since I've only replaced one pump under the watchful eye of my friend Rich the mechanic, am I correct to assume all I need is the HEPU kit that contains the pump, gasket, and o-ring seal for the heater tube?

BTW, the car has 175K on it. I purchased it last Feb with 164K and I bet it's the original pump.

Thanks for all your help.
