P1800ES Melting wires when cranking 1800

I was leaving a local festival last night, started the car, did a turnabout, and then the car died - in cranking heard a very rough grinding and saw smoke from under the hood - two wires were melting and smoking; both were coming from the coil; the first the power to the Weber carb, the second from the coil into the wire wrap assumed to head to the ignition. Can a disfunctional coil alone do this? maybe the voltage regulator? Any help is appreciated. thanks
