Correct Trans Fluid Level 900

After the full trans flush, the car shifts very noticably more smoothly, and seems to get better gas mileage. When I did the refill, I noticed that the dipstick level is about 1/2 way between the empty and full. A Volvo mechanic I know says this the correct level, but this does not seem to make sense. I think the correct hot level should be the top mark. Can anyone confirm this?
