The lobe that broke off is a balance weight, like the counterweights on a crankshaft. While the car will run without it, it's probably not a good thing to do for the long term. The distributor will be out of balance, which could cause vibration (unlikely to be noticeable) and lead to rapid wear of the distributor shaft and bearings.
