New Muffler Check Engine Light On 200 1991

Hello,

I recently had my muffler replaced (From the Cat to the tailpipe) New Front and Rear mufflers. The the old Axle pipe broke off were it joined the back muffler.

As soon as I drove it away my Check engine light came on. I realize that I now have back pressure but the check engine light never came on even before my muffler needed replacing.

The mechanic said it will probably go away and if not...he said to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes or so....and that should reset it.

I have not been to this mechanic before but I thought that a muffler is not a difficult thing to replace.

Is this a normal thing to happen?

Any replies will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Craig
