87 240 ignition /steering lock replacement? 200

Our ignition switch got chewed up in a failed attempt to steal the car. We now start it with a screwdriver into the ignition switch itself, which is disconnected from the lockset unit. Kind of fun to do but inspection time is nearing and it's time to make it right again.

I have a replacement steering lock/ignition switch complete with a key. What is the procedure for replacing this thing? obviously the column needs to be disassembled to some degree. Can anyone give some advice/pointers?

BTW...only the metal cover and a small part of the lock cylinder were damaged....is there any chance that the cylinder and the metal cover can be taken from the replacement and installed to save me the trouble of removing the whole thing?

The coolest part about not having an ignition key is the ability to leave the car running and locked, so we are going to maintain the two key system, one for ignition and one for lockup.
