My 740 died in the Mojave Desert once from pump failure when I had two dogs and the tempurature was 107 degrees. Since mine is a 1990 this might not be relevent to you but I'll blurb a few points. There's a relay behind the ash tray that shuts off the fuel if the car isn't running so that you don't simply fill the cylinders with gas. If I were to bypass that relay, I would risk a lot of gas in the cylinders and washing away the oil that lets pistons move.The death of that relay will shut the car off. A clogged fuel filter will strain the fuel pump and possibly kill it. That filter will also starve the engine for fuel until it shuts off suddenly, especially at highway speed. Waiting thirty minutes may allow some gas to get past the clog and give you a few minutes running time before the clog accumulates again and shuts the fuel down. Of the two pumps, one is for high speeds and when it goes, the car will go 20 mph tops and run ok only in idle.
Replace the filter unless you know it to be very new. Replace the relay as a matter of routine maintenance and pull the pump out and test it. It should spray gas like crazy if it's working. If it dribbles gas, then it's tired out.
