spare gas storage 200 1984

So, after running out of gas last night at 2am (again. always seems to happen at 2am) Ive decided to look into a small (2-5 gallon) gas tank to keep in the back of my wagon. (I know, I know, I should fill up before I get that low, but it doesnt always work out that way... ;-))

I have one main concern though, my volvo is a wagon, so I have no "tunk" to put it in, but I can put a small one in the side "smuggling compatments"; but I'm worried about fumes from containers that dont seal well.

Do any of you carry spare gas in wagons/sedans/any other car, and if so what kind of container do you recommend/have had bad experiences with? (metal, plastic, etc.)

Id like to find one of those spiffy metal volvo ones shaped like the wheel well, but there are none on ebay at the moment....

Thanks for any info you might have.
