240 died on highway, wont start. 200

My 240 (91') died while I was on the highway heading home from college. Right before the car died It started to make a deep muffler sound, and a few seconds later stalled. The car would start after that but would stall as soon as the gas pedal was pressed. Also the muffler sound that I heard right before the car died would begin when my foot was on the gas pedal. The car was towed back to my house. Now the car will not start at all.

So far I have checked
-the battery (I used jumper cables to try and crank)
-the spark plugs (their new, and have spark)
-the timing belt (still in one piece)
-the fuel pump relay ( its only a few months old)
The car still wont start.

If anyone has any ideas to help me get my car working, I would be more than grateful.
