thought i'd pass on a trick i learned today while doing my motor mounts on an 88 740 gle na ....the hard rubber ones.
The one on the passanger side was the broken 1 ( weird my 85 had the same one broken). does the passenger side mount go more on the 740's?
Anyway.... after taking off the top bolt( 17mm) on the passenger side and lossening the drivers side as much as possible with out taking it off... I jacked up the engine with the board across the oil pan. lossened the 3 bolts (13mm)and took off the mounts bracket.
thank god for pb blaster it helped tremendously.
I popped the new 1 in lickety split ( remember to take off the grease sleaves that protect and lube the threads)and was feeling pretty good.
But wait ... I still had the other side to do ....nah even though I bought 2 it's getting dark ...it'Sunday .
Well u are supposed to do them in pairs .....and I couldn't resist.... the first one was so easy.
The drivers side is a differnet story ... I made the mistake of taking off the drivers side bolt all the way and lossening the passenger side as much as possible.
Oh when jacking up the engine remember to take off the fan shroud ....I didn't and almost broke some things.
I jacked up the engine and it shifted slightly when it cleared the old mount.
took off the 3 nuts that hold the mounts braket ( used lots of extensions and swivel headed off set rachet to manuver amoungst the hoses etc.) removed bracket and took the mount off the bracket out of the car( more pb blaster) popped the new in and slowly bolted the bracket back in .
Big problem ...mount no longer aligned with engine !!!!i dropped the hydralic height very slowly hoping that it would somehow slip in.
It didn't ....I put the nut on the passenger side to keep in in place.I raised
the lift a little and stuck my finger under to see how far off it was ...bout a half inch i tugged and puched a little on the engine ...no luck ....i put my finger on the top of the mount's bolt and tugged ...hey it moved a little ....light bulb time.....I grabbed some nylon rope 1/4 in and put some gloves on and lowered the engine to sit on the mount very litely and tugged toward the fender ..low and behold it moved enough to line up ....I dropped the engine down slowly and wah la she droped right in place and I ppreceded to snug things up and pat myself on the back for a job well done.
I hope this might help some other green horns out there.
