The quick version: have a 1988 240 wagon, 130k, rear OE shocks were shot and leaking. Ride was wallowy. Ordered and mounted new KYB GR2 rears. Totally, totally disappointed, the GR2 in my opinion is way too light of a shock for the rear of this car. Way underdamped compression and especially rebound. Anyway, the GR2s were like a 10% improvement from blown 20 year old OEMs, just terrible. I coughed up some more money and ordered Sachs Advantage from FCP and put them on. Unbelievable difference, night and day. 100% improvement. Still maybe a smidge soft for my taste, but just a smidge, probably perfect for most folks. Bottom line for anyone considering rear shocks for a 240 wagon in my opinion is to absolutely forget you ever heard of KYB GR2 and find a source for the German made Sachs Advantage and spend a little more to do the job right the first time. By the way, I don't hate GR2 on all applications. I have them all around on my wifes 1996 VW Golf and they are great, totally unlike the same on my 240, where at least the rears are worthless. I probably won't even install the front GR2s I also ordered as if it is anything like the rears a total waste of time and money. Time to order some front Advantage.
After a week of enjoying the new rear shocks, I received and installed iPd sway bars front and rear. WOW. Huge improvement in control and almost no ride penalty. The car feels transformed, cannot believe the cars did not ship this way from the factory. Amazed after pulling the stock sway bars how wimpy they are. If you are considering this mod, pull the trigger. My car was such a pig prior to the Sachs and especially sways that I was thinking of getting rid of it, now I love it. Money well spent.
Thought I'd share my 2c
