Volvo CR-813 and CR-814. (Which CD players will retro fit into a '91 740 without any mods?) 700

I agree, the CR-813 or CR-814 (depending on if you are in the US or overseas) can provide you with what you're looking for. However, the unit does not have a CD player built in, it is a Tape Deck with an Alpine M-Bus jack on the back and it has the ability to control a 6-disc changer.

Advantages:
-Factory look of a Volvo OEM radio.
-Theft deterent, because nobody wants to steal a tape deck these days.
-Plugs right into an Alpine M-Bus CD changer (jack in the back of tape deck).
-Can use the newer Alpine Ai-Net changers with a $25 adapter.
-Can put your entire music collection on CD in MP3 form on 6 discs in a newer Ai-Net CD changer from Alpine, and use the $25 adapter to convert to M-Bus signal.
-Can use an iPod with a $50 adapter (home-made by someone on TurboBricks).
-Well built construction by Alpine under contract to Volvo.
-Has 18 FM presets, 6 AM.

Disadvantages:
-You must run the M-Bus cable or Ai-Net cable to the trunk or wherever you are going to mount the CD changer. (glove box conversion can be done, but takes up all the space)
-No seek/scan forwards or backwards within a CD track (pressing forwards or backwards takes you up or down one track). If you use an Alpine External Controller (also available with the Volvo logo on it instead), you can have the seek/scan ability, but the signal will be converted to a FM radio signal and then the tape deck must be tuned to that FM station.
-Must use a radio security code to unlock the radio after installing it in your car. If the seller doesn't have the code, you can call the dealership and have it looked up using the VIN number of the car it came from or the serial number on the radio itself (the techie at the dealership may or may not know how to do the serial number lookup, but it's possible using the internet connection they have to the Volvo database in Sweden).
-Can have issues if abused by previous owner, or may have capacitors that are dried out and cause tempermental operation.

You should be able to fine one in a 940 that came with the premium sound package (optional), and it will usually have a 6 speaker sound system (2 speakers in the dash, and one in each door). The tape deck has a 2-channel amp built into it, and then is augmented by an external 4 channel Volvo/Alpine amp using the standard round-Din connector. The internal 2-channel amp signal is carried on extra wires on the main 7x2 connector that supplies power to the radio.

I hope that helps answer the questions that might come up during consideration, purchase, and installation.
God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
