Where is the engine temp sensor ? 700

My temp gauge on the 1990 740 B230 , 8 valve is starting to do what the gas gauge has been doing for a couple of years now; it requires a whacking of the dashboard to wake up and act like a gauge. I may try to hook up an old water temp gauge I have as it is very important that this car not overheat ( I respectfully decline the position of Mayor of NewHeadgsaketland ) Where is the temp gauge getting its info? The radiator sensor controls the condensor fan. Thank you all for taking my possibly lame questons in this and previous posts
